NEED LEAK DETECTION?

Frequently Asked Questions

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT LEAK DETECTION

Finding a hidden water leak can be frustrating, especially when there are no obvious signs of where the water is coming from. We’ve answered some of the most common questions about our leak detection process, technology and what to expect when you book Detect Water Leaks.

01.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

You may need leak detection if you have an unexplained increase in your water bill, a water meter that continues running when no water is being used, damp areas, reduced water pressure or unexplained water loss.

If you know exactly where the leak is, a plumber may be able to repair it directly. If the source is hidden or unknown, leak detection can help locate the problem before repairs or unnecessary excavation begin.

Tell us what you’ve noticed, when the problem started, where you suspect the leak may be and whether there has been an increase in water usage. Any previous plumbing work or known pipe routes can also be helpful.

Yes. We carry out leak detection at residential and commercial properties, including houses, complexes, offices, retail premises and other commercial properties.

02.

LEAK DETECTION & TECHNOLOGY

Every leak is different. The technician assesses the property, pipework and symptoms before selecting the most appropriate method. In some cases, more than one detection method may be used.

Tracer gas is introduced into the relevant pipework and specialist equipment is used to detect where the gas escapes. It is particularly useful when investigating difficult-to-find concealed or underground leaks.

Escaping pressurised water creates sound and vibration. Sensitive acoustic equipment can be used to listen for these sounds and help narrow down the position of a hidden leak.

A thermal camera detects differences in surface temperature. These temperature patterns can assist the technician in identifying areas that may be affected by concealed water or moisture.

Leak detection is designed to reduce unnecessary excavation and damage, but some leaks may ultimately require access for confirmation or repair. The purpose of detection is to narrow down the affected area as accurately as possible first.

03.

AFTER THE LEAK DETECTION

Once the investigation is complete, we’ll explain the findings and the recommended next steps so that the appropriate repair can be planned.

Yes. A formal leak detection report is issued after payment and records the findings of the investigation and relevant recommendations.

Leak detection and leak repair are separate stages. The purpose of the investigation is first to identify or narrow down the source so that the correct repair can be undertaken.

Some leaks are more complex than others. The technician may recommend additional testing or another detection method depending on the pipework, property and findings from the initial investigation.
